Sheba Global and Korle Bu Advance Ophthalmology Care in Ghana

Sheba Medical Center’s Department of Ophthalmology has completed a collaborative clinical mission in Accra, Ghana, partnering with Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to deliver patient evaluations, complex surgeries, and hands-on training.
The mission exemplifies Sheba Global’s commitment to expanding high‑quality ophthalmic care and knowledge exchange in underserved regions.
Joint Surgical Days in Pediatric and Oculoplastic Care
The mission brought together three Sheba Global ophthalmologists: Dr. Ayelet Priel , Dr. Sharon Armarnik, and Dr. Or Gil, who worked side‑by‑side with colleagues at Korle Bu to deepen shared expertise in pediatric ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery.
The first day focused on comprehensive patient evaluations and determining individual surgical plans. Several cases required timely intervention, and ongoing clinical discussions highlighted a truly collaborative approach built on mutual learning, professional exchange, and shared decision‑making.
Following the assessments, the teams established a coordinated operative schedule for the mission’s surgical days. With adjacent operating rooms, one dedicated to pediatric ophthalmology and the other to oculoplastic procedures, surgeons often worked together when cases required combined expertise from both specialties. The team also connected in real time with a neuroradiologist at Sheba Medical Center for critical imaging review, reinforcing the mission’s integrated, multidisciplinary model of care.

Hands-On Training and Academic Collaboration
Training was a central pillar of the mission. Residents and fellows at Korle Bu participated actively in both diagnostic workups and surgical procedures, gaining valuable experience under the guidance of Sheba’s specialists. The shared academic environment fostered growth for all participants and strengthened long‑term professional ties between the two institutions. As one team member remarked, the collaboration “enriched all participants and strengthened our connection to our colleagues in Ghana.”
Diplomatic and Cultural Engagement
During their stay, the Sheba team met with the Israeli Ambassador to Ghana to discuss the mission’s goals, share impressions, and highlight Sheba Global’s broader role in international medical outreach.
This mission reflects the power of collaborative medicine and shared clinical expertise. By combining patient care, complex surgery, hands-on training, and cultural exchange, the experience proved deeply meaningful for all involved. Sheba Global looks forward to maintaining strong links with Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and continuing this spirit of partnership in future ophthalmology missions.
