Sheba & Bar-Ilan University Launch $120 Million Biotech Institute

In a landmark partnership, Sheba Medical Center and Bar-Ilan University have joined forces to establish Israel’s first dedicated biotech research institute, backed by a $120 million investment. Located in Sheba’s new Health Tech Valley in Ramat Gan, the state-of-the-art center aims to drive rapid advances in cancer treatment, AI-based diagnostics, organ printing, and genetic engineering.
This alliance strengthens the bridge between academia, medicine, and industry, positioning Sheba as a cornerstone of Israel’s biomedical innovation and a catalyst for global healthcare progress.
Advancing Medical Innovation and Economic Growth
The newly launched institute represents a major leap for Israel’s life sciences sector. Built on the NIH model, it focuses on fast-tracking discoveries from lab research to clinical application, dramatically reducing the time from idea to treatment. The facility brings together advanced labs for cancer biology, computational biology, AI-driven data analysis, medical robotics, sensor technologies, 3D organ bioprinting, and genetic engineering.
Prof. Arie Zaban, President of Bar-Ilan University, emphasized in an interview with Ynet the importance of the collaboration:
“Our partnership with Sheba will significantly accelerate the transition from laboratory discovery to clinical application,” he said, highlighting its impact on both national and global health advancement.
Prof. Yitshak Kreiss, Director General of Sheba Medical Center, underlined the broader vision:
“Sheba’s Health Tech Valley, in collaboration with partners like Bar-Ilan University, is turning healthcare into a growth engine for Israel’s economy and industry.”
Supporting this outlook, Tal Hauptman, real estate manager at Migdal Insurance, told Ynet:
“This unique project has the potential to be a national growth engine.”

A Hub for Global Collaboration
Located in the heart of Ramat Gan, Health Tech Valley offers a dynamic environment where innovation meets clinical excellence. The campus features research hubs, state-of-the-art labs, and sustainable infrastructure, fostering collaboration between academia, healthcare organizations, startups, and global industry leaders. Its proximity to Bar-Ilan University—less than one kilometer away—encourages seamless integration of interdisciplinary teams focused on translating research into real-world solutions.
Ranked 9th worldwide by Newsweek among Smart Hospitals, Sheba Medical Center is globally recognized for its leadership in AI-powered medicine and personalized therapies.
Designed as a magnet for international collaboration, the Sheba-Bar-Ilan institute welcomes researchers, healthcare systems, philanthropic organizations, and commercial partners from around the world. A joint steering committee, modeled after the NIH governance structure, ensures rigorous evaluation and flexible resource management to keep the institute at the forefront of biomedical science.
Key areas of focus include microbiome research, regenerative medicine, sensor technology, and other emerging fields.
Prof. Dror Harats, Chair of Sheba’s Research Authority, told Ynet:
“This is a major step in making Israel a world leader in biomedical research.”
Shaping the Future of Global Health
Supported by Migdal Insurance and Financial Holdings, this initiative represents more than just infrastructure—it’s a statement of purpose. Together, Sheba and Bar-Ilan are investing in the future of patients worldwide while strengthening Israel’s standing as a global hub for biotechnology.
By transforming groundbreaking ideas into tangible treatments and technologies, the institute promises to redefine how innovation reaches patients—empowering clinicians, boosting economic growth, and fostering collaboration across borders.
Sheba’s Health Tech Valley thus emerges not only as a center for scientific excellence but also as a driver of economic vitality, international partnerships, and a healthier future for all.
