Sheba Medical Center, Tel HaShomer, Israel’s national hospital, is mobilizing a four-person team of humanitarian medical experts and doctors to Beira, Mozambique, where a deadly cyclone has killed nearly 450 people and left a devastating path of destruction. The team will arrive in Mozambique tomorrow at noon to assess the most desperate needs and begin treating patients.
Sheba Medical Center, Tel HaShomer, Israel’s national hospital, is mobilizing a four-person team of humanitarian medical experts and doctors to Beira, Mozambique, where a deadly cyclone has killed nearly 450 people and left a devastating path of destruction. The team just arrived in Mozambique to assess the most desperate needs and begin treating patients.
Approximately 90 percent of Beira was destroyed by the cyclone that went on to wreak further devastation in Zimbabwe and Malawi.
Sheba Medical Center’s needs assessment team will quickly and meticulously evaluate immediate medical and supply needs with boots on the ground. Leading the team is Prof. Elhanan Bar-On, Director for Sheba’s Israel Center for Disaster Medicine and Humanitarian Response, who travels the world with Sheba’s medical emergency response teams providing life-saving treatments, supplies and equipment across the world.
“When there is a need in the world, Sheba Medical Center is there. It is what we do. It’s part of our mission and our calling,” said Prof. Bar-On. “We want the people of Mozambique to know that help is coming.”
The Israel Center for Disaster Medicine and Humanitarian Response at Sheba Medical Center boasts highly experienced doctors and specialists who continue to lead the charge in preparing and responding to global humanitarian crises and emergencies. Sheba Medical Center has deployed humanitarian missions throughout Africa including to Zambia, Nigeria and Tanzania, as well as led life-saving humanitarian missions in Guatemala, Haiti and elsewhere. Humanitarian aid has been a part of Sheba Medical Center’s mission since its establishment in 1948.
